Incident at construction site on Liberty Avenue is second fatal industrial accident in past four days
A worker has died and another has been injured after an excavator fell on its side at a Hong Kong construction site.
Police said on Monday that they received a report at 9.42am that an industrial accident had occurred on the site on Liberty Avenue in Ho Man Tin.
A union chief said both workers were rushed to hospital, with one of them later certified dead.
The Labour Department said it was investigating the accident.
Chau Sze-kit, chairman of the Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union, said the deceased was a 41-year-old handyman, while the operator of the excavator had sustained minor injuries.
“The operator told me that the company required him to lift some cubes with the excavator on a muddy slope when it turned onto its side,” he said.
“And the deceased happened to be located below the excavator, so when it turned onto its side, he was crushed.”
