Transport minister Mable Chan says the upcoming regulatory framework must prioritize data security and national security.
Hong Kong’s transport authorities will “actively explore” the secure storage of ride-hailing data ahead of new industry regulations set to take effect in August, as part of efforts to align with national security requirements.
Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan on Monday stopped short of disclosing whether user data collected by ride-hailing platforms in Hong Kong would need to be stored locally, but underscored the significance of privacy and security.
“Our principle and focus are on safeguarding data security and national security. The storage, transfer, and backup of data must be carried out in a secure manner,” she told a Legislative Council panel meeting discussing the new regulations.
Deputy Secretary for Transport and Logistics Kirk Yip Hoi-ying noted that the regulations included clauses related to protecting national security within ride-hailing platform licences.
Yip stated that due to the volume of personal data involved, operators must “strictly comply with privacy regulations.”
“The clauses will specify that collected personal data can only be used for providing ride-hailing services, and platforms must first obtain client approval,” he said, adding that authorities would investigate the most secure and suitable storage options.
