City leader outlines ambitions for final year of current term and reviews past four, stating: ‘Hong Kong’s interests come before my own’
Referencing the well-known saying that “a year is a long time in politics”, Lee avoided answering whether he would serve another five-year term and instead concentrated on what he considered maintaining stability in governance. He expressed being “very positive” about the prospects for Hong Kong’s economic growth.
“A year is a lengthy period during which many things can be accomplished … So a lot of these developments can occur within a year,” Lee remarked, highlighting policy initiatives implemented under his administration, such as permitting stock market transactions during typhoons and introducing variable toll charges at three harbour crossings.
Looking back at the previous four years leading the special administrative region, he commented: “Serving as chief executive is a duty that requires selflessness and total dedication to the greater welfare of Hong Kong … The interests of Hong Kong outweigh my personal interests.”
