Hong Kong leader says traditional markets like US and Europe remain just as vital as city pursues new alliances

Hong Kong is committed to broadening into emerging markets while reinforcing its connections with traditional allies, and "will not abandon any markets" despite geopolitical challenges, according to the city's chief executive.

Acknowledging that Hong Kong, as an open economy, was vulnerable to global instability, Lee emphasized that the intricate geopolitical landscape would only underscore the city's distinct advantage as a "safe, stable and secure society" for investors.

"I will not permit external forces to alter Hong Kong's fundamental strengths. We assess what benefits Hong Kong, what the key success factors have been, and ensure we preserve and enhance them," he stated, referencing the city's unwavering commitment to remaining a free port amid the US-China trade dispute and rising tariffs.

Lee said he would guarantee the city's resilience against disruptions, pointing to assistance measures introduced for motorists when the conflict in the Middle East drove up global fuel costs.

"At the same time, we make Hong Kong more robust. If we focus on economic development, then we must explore more fresh opportunities elsewhere," he added.
